Until a few months ago I had never heard of wine charms. Wine racks, sure; wine cellar, sounds great. I would have thought a wine charm was something you stuck on your charm bracelet. A whole universe of gift ideas has now opened up for me, and I am grateful. I have never received wine charms, so chances are they are an under-appreciated gift item.
If you can’t find a wine shop or a store that stocks wine paraphernalia, The Wine Rack Store stocks a wide variety of wine charms in themes such as Christmas, sports, and Valentine’s Day. I especially like the various animal and flower-themed sets of charms available. They are also easy to make at home if you are a crafty sort of person. I have already debated the ethics of getting my young children to make wine charms in a previous article.
In case you don’t know, charms are used to distinguish wine glasses, so that if you are afraid of germs (it is flu season after all), or do not wish to accidentally sully your own wine with the flavor of another, you can defend yourself by marking glasses without being reduced to using masking tape and markers. One thing I discovered when wine tasting is that even a small amount of one wine can affect the flavour and appearance of another.
Suction cup wine charms are another option which works in the same way. They aren’t as elegant in my opinion, but they’re a lot of fun. Another fun item is the wine clip. They are colorful, entertaining, but not as stylish as the charm, which resembles jewelry for stemware.
By the way, beware giving your girlfriend wine charms if you have not already given her jewelry.
